Origin & Maker

The story of OpusX begins with what many thought was impossible. In the mid-1990s, the conventional wisdom in the cigar world was clear: wrapper-grade tobacco simply could not be grown in the Dominican Republic. Carlos “Carlito” Fuente Jr. disagreed. He planted 37 acres of Cuban-seed tobacco at Chateau de la Fuente, the family’s farm in Caribe, Dominican Republic, and waited.

What emerged changed the industry. OpusX launched in 1995 as the first successful Dominican puro — wrapper, binder, and filler all grown on Dominican soil. It proved that the DR could produce wrapper leaves rivaling anything from Cuba, Nicaragua, or Ecuador. The cigar quickly became one of the most sought-after smokes in the world, with allocations that kept demand perpetually ahead of supply.

Fast forward to 2021 — the 25th anniversary of that groundbreaking launch. Rather than a simple commemorative band swap, Fuente created an entirely new presentation: the OpusX 25th Anniversary, initially available only inside French-made Elie Bleu humidors priced from $9,250 to $70,000. By April 2025, the Perfecto vitola finally received a nationwide release, giving more enthusiasts a chance to experience this legendary blend.

The Blend

True to Fuente form, the exact blend of the OpusX 25 remains a closely guarded secret. What we know: it’s produced at Tabacalera A. Fuente y Cia. in the Dominican Republic, and the tobaccos are believed to come from the Chateau de la Fuente farm — the same fields that birthed the original OpusX wrapper leaf. The wrapper itself is a dark, oily Dominican leaf with a rich reddish-brown hue and visible tooth, suggesting extended aging and careful fermentation.

Available vitolas include the original Churchill (7 x 50), a Lancero and Toro (both extremely limited, found only in the Rare Finds sampler), and the Perfecto — nicknamed “La Familia X to the 25th Power” — which comes individually housed in metal coffins with flip-top lids. Each Perfecto box doubles as a functional humidor with a removable tray and Boveda humidification, and includes a mystery key that Carlito himself says will “serve a special purpose in the future.”

Tasting Notes

The OpusX 25 opens with a sweet and spicy sensation that reviewers have compared to a Cameroon wrapper — dry cedar, building creaminess, and a peppery kick that mellows as the smoke develops. Grilled apple notes and light chili pepper appear on the retrohale, with the first third delivering fairly full flavor at medium body.

Through the middle section, the sweetness fades while the chili pepper intensifies on both nose and palate. The body thickens to medium-full, with cedar evolving into more pronounced woody notes and dehydrated fruit sweetness emerging as a counterbalance. The final third brings white pepper on retrohales and sharper wood tones, building to medium-plus strength. Halfwheel’s Patrick Lagreid scored it a 90, calling it “an impressive, enjoyable and collection-worthy cigar” with particularly strong first and second thirds.

For pairing, reach for something that can stand up to the complexity — a well-aged rum, a peaty single malt, or a rich espresso. The cigar’s evolving sweetness and spice make it a versatile partner at the bar.

The OpusX Society: A New Chapter

Also featured here is the OpusX La Edición de la Sociedad — the first cigar created specifically for the OpusX Society, founded in 2021 by designer Manny Iriarte. This is no rebadged OpusX; Carlito Fuente Jr. himself described it as “something previously never done within the OpusX series” — an entirely new blend with a wrapper notably darker than any standard OpusX release.

The 6¼ x 49 Grand Corona scored a 90 from halfwheel, with reviewers praising its mellow, creamy opening that quickly builds into pronounced woodiness, earth, and an unexpected vanilla pudding-like sweetness in the final third. It’s a cigar that rewards patience and attention.

The OpusX 25 isn’t just a cigar — it’s a statement. The distinctive green band is unique among all OpusX releases, paired with cedar sleeves and bright orange foot ribbons. The packaging alone won the #1 spot in halfwheel’s 2024 Packaging Awards. On The Consensus 2025 — an industry-wide poll of the best cigars — the OpusX 25 landed at #11, a remarkable showing for a cigar that’s been in production for just a few years.
