Byron Reserva 5 Años: Aged Luxury from Selected Tobacco

Spotted on the floor with the box open behind them: two Byron Reserva 5 Años sticks — one lighter wrapper, one darker — both wearing the Lord Byron portrait band and that black-and-gold Reserva 5 Años secondary. If you collect ultra-premiums or you’re hunting something with real rest time on it, this line is worth a look at Ole Grapevine Cigar & Tobacco in Grapevine, TX.

Who makes Byron

Byron comes from Selected Tobacco, the Costa Rican house associated with Nelson Alfonso (the same creative force behind iconic Habanos packaging, including Behike). The modern brand picks up a 19th-century Cuban Byron name and builds it out as Siglo XIX / XX / XXI expressions — era-inspired blends, often with each vitola doing its own thing rather than one shared recipe stretched across sizes.

What “Reserva 5 Años” actually means

It’s not a flavor name. Reserva 5 Años points to the program’s secondary aging: cigars rested for years after rolling so the blend can settle before release. That’s why the secondary band is as important as the portrait primary — you’re looking at patience in cellophane, not just pretty foil.

The sticks in the shot

These two show the range you’ll see at the booth: a tan/natural-leaning wrapper next to a darker chocolate maduro-leaning one, both Reserva-banded. Trade press often talks about Costa Rica production (Tabacos de Costa Rica) and, on related Byron releases, Ecuadorian wrapper with Nicaraguan and Peruvian filler — though Byron keeps a lot of blend detail close to the vest. Don’t invent a scorecard from a photo; come smoke one and decide for yourself.

Presentation

Byron packaging has always been part of the pitch — ceramic jars with humidification on some releases, special humidors on Grand Poemas vintages, and those ornate dual bands that read across a humidor aisle. The open Byron box in the background of this shot is exactly the kind of presentation that stops people walking the floor.

Who it’s for

Special-occasion smokers and collectors who want medium-leaning complexity with serious aging pedigree. If you already lean toward Atabey or other Selected Tobacco projects, Byron sits in that same conversation — refined, limited, not a Wednesday beater.
